Celebrity Millennium

9/20/2013

The unfortunate issues with the propulsion system on the Celebrity Millennium has resulted in quite a few unhappy cruisers. Some were unhappy due to the cruise being cancelled before they ever left, others having to juggle and adjust plans while things are changing mid trip for them.

Compared to the compensation I have seen offered during other problem cruises, I very much feel that the compensation that seems to be offered is fair. The passengers who were on the cruises that were cancelled and cut short midway through the trip are really the ones I am referring to. At initial amount of refunds and looking at the overall total cruise cost, it did feel a bit small. But once you truly break down what the cruise fares were from the taxes and any land portion, the fact that they are offered a full refund of cruise fare along with a future cruise credit equaling the same cruise fare.

Anytime things don't go as planned on a vacation that you have put your time and money into it is a very stressful time. This one unfortunately tied many hands in the process of rectifying and trying to salvage what is left of a vacation. Hopefully all of those onboard are now ready to try to re-book their Alaskan trip using their refund and future cruise credit to replace their lost trip.

Sharing a little of our Christmas cruise

I just thought I would share a little piece of our cruise we took back in December to the Caribbean. It was a fabulous trip that I really wasn't sure we should take because it was over Christmas. Looking back it was perfect, the only downfall being my youngest daughter changed her mind and didn't go.

Cruise or an All Inclusive?

7/27/2012

So many times I am asked: Which is a better value, Cruising or an All Inclusive? Truthfully, it is different for everyone. Some people prefer one over the other for whatever reason but the value in both options is definitely there.

With cruising, most activities are involved along with food (there are always options to upgrade for an additional fee). The biggest costs associated with cruising come from shore excursions and bar bills. Since there are so many options for things to do in ports this can fluctuate greatly in price. Some things are worth the price tag, others are not. (Again, personal preference) The other cost with cruising is the bar bill. Most people enjoy going on vacation and having a drink or two. If you are the type of person who wants to order 10-20 drinks per day of all different kinds, cruising would definitely not be the best value for your vacation dollar. But if you like the idea of seeing a different port everyday and can keep your bar tab in check, cruising is an excellent value.

All Inclusive vacations offer unlimited drinks and food along with most non-motorized activities. Most of the time it is a bit higher in price per day to go to an all inclusive than to go on a cruise once you factor in airfare but not always. Also with an all inclusive, as with any land vacation, you arrive at one destination and stay there for the duration of your trip. This is not always a bad thing, just depends on what you are looking for in a vacation.

Basically, there is no easy answer. Every situation is different and pricing is always fluctuating. Once you choose between the two, find a price you are c

Paying for a vacation

There are so many options to paying for that vacation that you are planning to book. You can pay for it on your credit card and then pay it off over time. (This tends to be the majority vote for how to pay for a trip) There is the option of saving until you have enough to pay it in full. There are also payment plans. Any one of theses are completely effective ways to budget for your cruise. It's all a matter of what your personal budget allows for and knowing how to work with it. I personally, am a big fan of a combination of payments. I budget initially to come up with a bigger deposit, then make monthly payments from then until I have to make the final payment. After final payment, I make monthly payments to my vacation fund for spending money and use my credit card if I need it. After my trip :-( I continue making the monthly payments until my card is paid off. Then repeat!!!

Everyone is different. Find what works for you and go for it!!

Passports: Do you need them or not?

3/30/2012

Passports are required for any air travel outside of the US, but travel by sea is a little different. If you are departing and returning to a US port, you can travel with Birth Certificate and state issued ID.
So why pay for a passport for a cruise? For alot of years I felt the same. Even though the majority of the travel industry disagrees with me, I'm still not sure it's something you have to incur the cost of. My family (5 of us, no small expense) decided with our last cruise to go ahead and get them but more for the conveinience and the option to use them in the future. The total including pictures was approximately $700 give or take a few dollars.
Yes, it is true, if something were to happen and you need to catch up to the ship or return home from a cruise unexpectedly you would have a very hard time getting through customs without one. But I always wonder, what if you don't have the means to do so anyway? A passport isn't going to help you afford that $2000 next day flight. In the event that there is trouble in a port and you have to locate a US Embassy, it helps to have a passport but I would never carry mine off the ship. I simply carry the number for them to look it up.
I think having a passport is a good thing, just maybe not if it is at the expense of not being able to take a cruise.

Is cruising safe? (In honor of Costa Concordia and 100 year anniversary of the Titanic)

3/13/2012

Cruising is the safest mode of travel on the planet. Between 15 and 16 million people cruised in 2011 alone. That is alot of cruisers that have had a completely safe cruising experience.

When is the last time anyone heard of a ship sinking prior to the Concordia? Titanic? That's 100 years. Think about how frequently there are plane crashes. Or better yet, automobile accidents.

The Concordia sinking is a horrible tragedy, as was the Titanic. Any time there is a loss of life, its a terrible thing. But in no way shape or form will this keep me from cruising. Maybe will just take the muster drill a little more seriously.

To take a carseat or not to take a carseat? That is the question!

3/4/2012

Everyone is very concerned with the safety of their child, as they should be, but recently we had to make the decision to bring our carseat for my 1 year old son with us when we went on a cruise.
We were flying to the port (with infant in lap), taking a shuttle to the pier, booking excursions where they provided a van in Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. There was no need for one on the plane, we would have just paid to have it checked since he didn't have his own seat. Shuttles to the pier don't even have seatbelts, so would have just added that to our monsterous stack of luggage. Seeing as there was no guarantee that the tour vans provided would even have seatbelts and that they would be working (some are third world countries), it seemed silly to bring one at ports.
So as much as it gave me ALOT of anxiety to go an entire week without a carseat, I believe we made the right choice for our situation. Had we decided to rent a car to get to or from the pier we definitely would have had one with us, regardless of the hassle. However, in our situation, we were better off not paying the additional cost to check one on the plane ($25 each way, we can address that another day!) to simply have to lug the carseat around but never be able to use it. Choose wisely when making this decision, make sure you have considered every possible time you might need it and go from there.

Extra charge for dining on a cruise

1/30/2012

Is it really neccessary to pay an additional charge for dining on a cruise when you already paid the cruise fare which includes your meals? This was my question prior to taking a Christmas time cruise this past December. With charges running anywhere between $10 per person up to $25 per person, this can really add up for a family of 5 on a budget. The flip side of that statement is: we like to have a fancy meal or two while traveling.

I am here to say, while it may be nice to splurge a little and it may be better quality, the free dining options are more than adequate. Some things we thought were great, some just OK and others we didn't like. I don't think that would have been any different had we paid $25 each to have a slightly better steak.

BOTTOM LINE:  We would rather spend $25 each once we get home and go out to dinner. After all, who wants to cook when you first get home from vacation?
